Aquatic Nano-biotechnology Laboratory |
Dr. Seyed Ali Johari |
Nanotechnology and biotechnology are among the converging technologies the application of which in various branches of science, including fisheries, has opened up new horizons for researchers, technologists, and aquaculture scientists.
The activity of the Aquatic Nano-biotechnology Laboratory is focused on investigation of applying nanotechnology and biotechnology in fisheries, especially in aquaculture. Studies conducted in the laboratory to date have addressed topics including the application of nano-materials in aquatic reproduction and nutrition, use of nano-carriers in targeted delivery of micronutrients, antioxidants, hormones, and drugs, and use of nano-coatings in the manufacture of water filters required for aquaculture. Moreover, several types of nanomaterial (silver nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles, organic metal frames, etc.) have been produced in the laboratory to date.
Other activities of the laboratory include the investigation of aquatic toxicology and aquatic nano-toxicology, which can be conducted both for single species and in a variety of simulated ecosystems (microcosms and mesocosms).
The laboratory is also engaged in the construction and operation of aquariums and reproduction and breeding of various species of ornamental aquatic animals and of live foods.
There has been successful breeding, maintenance, and testing activities in regard to various aquatic species, such as convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), zebrafish (Danio rerio), Artemia sp., and Daphnia magna, and microalgal species, such as Dunaliella salina, Nannochloropsis oculata, Ceratophyllum demersum, and Lymnaea sp. |
